Over 500,000 men (and women),
approximately one-fifth of the states male population served in the
Civil War in some 300 different organizations. Of this number, some
57,000 sacrificed with their lives through combat and/or disease.
While there were no battles or
skirmishes fought on New York State soil during the Civil War, the
contributions made by Central New Yorkers (in terms of lives lost or
changed or in the production of material goods necessary for the war
effort) had a major impact in determining the outcome of the "war
between the states."
